Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Trigger Point release is a technique used to treat muscle disorders in patients. This technique is used widely in humans to reduce pain from orthopedic conditions such as arthritis, to treat muscle pain from injury, and also to help athletes perform at a higher level. This technique can be used for the same reasons in our veterinary patients. This treatment is very similar to acupuncture, in which a very small gauge needle is used to “release” the trigger point. After a trigger point is identified, the needle is inserted into the point and pulsed a few times to make it relax. The needle is then removed. For an effective treatment, all trigger points that can be identified will be treated during the same session to the tolerance of the patient.

From human medicine, we know that trigger points are painful and that they also reduce the proper use of the affected muscle. This causes weakness and dysfunction which can be instantly regained once the trigger point is treated. Immediately after treatment, the muscle will be sore and this can last for a day or so. According to human patients, the feeling is very similar to the soreness that we feel after a hard workout. Our veterinary patients may show this by being more tired than normal, being slow to rise, having a decreased appetite or being a little reluctant to get up and moving. This is normal and expected after Myofascial Trigger Point release.
